Welcome, girlbosses. Women's beauty standards have been unfair since the dawn of time. All around the world, historians can attest to the outlandish beauty norms of the past. In China, women would routinely break the bones in their own feet and bind them to be as tiny as possible; small feet were considered to be incredibly beautiful. In 10th century Japan, women would blacken their teeth with iron in a practice known as ohaguro. The solution prevented tooth decay and was a sign of wealth. In the 1700s, women in the West would place padded bustles under their skirts to make their back sides look more voluptuous.

Beauty standards are fleeting and constantly changing. What is popular now will not be in fifty, one hundred, or one thousand years. While it is important to stay healthy and hygienic, true beauty comes from within and withstands the test of time. There is no reason to go out of your way to conform to this century's arbitrary conventions used to define beauty.
